There are plenty of them in sight again: those bright red dots in the verges and fields. Poppies may look fragile, but these brave little plants are actually real survivors.
Poppies live fast and intensively. They are annual plants that sometimes germinate in the autumn. The first leaves of a poppy plant form a root rosette on the soil. In the spring the hairy flower stem and the flower bud are formed. The stalk is hairy, so that insects from the soil cannot easily crawl to the flower. The flower bud consists of two hairy sepals, which fall off when the flower opens. When the flower has been pollinated, the red petals fall off. The ovary then grows into a fruit box.
