Silence by the reservoir

by Carlijn Basteleur-Jorritsma

A tranquil reservoir winds its way between densely vegetated, green hills. The almost perfectly still water reflects the trees, the clouds and the soft light, causing the landscape and its reflection to merge almost imperceptibly. On the right-hand side, a simple tower block stands on the water’s edge. Half-hidden behind the foliage, it forms a small human touch in an otherwise overwhelming natural setting. In the distance, a small red buoy subtly catches the eye.

This image arose from my fascination with places where nature and human engineering meet. The reservoir appears peaceful and timeless, whilst the building serves as a reminder of the function and control that lie behind this landscape. It is precisely this contrast that makes the place special: tranquillity on the surface, purposefulness beneath.

The photograph exudes tranquillity, space and stillness. The soft light and the various shades of green give the image a warm, natural feel, whilst the dark reflections add depth and a touch of mystery. For me, this work is about that moment when you don’t have to do anything – just look, breathe and let the silence wash over you.

Thanks to its expansive composition and subtle details, the photograph remains captivating without being overbearing. In an interior, the work brings a sense of nature and relaxation. It fits particularly well in a living room, bedroom, study or quiet reception area, and appeals to lovers of forests, water landscapes, walking and understated photography.
