Silence

by Annette Schmucker

The artwork depicts a dreamlike riverside landscape in panoramic format, dominated by intense shades of blue and turquoise. A tranquil river winds its way through the centre of the picture, its surface shimmering gently in the light. In the background, a delicate glow ranging from pink to gold illuminates the horizon, creating an atmospheric contrast to the cool colours. Both banks are densely lined with dreamy, leafy trees, which shimmer in various shades of blue, turquoise and silver. The texture of the trees appears very lifelike and almost three-dimensional thanks to the dabbing and palette-knife-like application of paint. Here and there, darker tree trunks and branches rise up, lending the scene structure and depth. The light from afar is reflected smoothly on the water’s surface, drawing the viewer’s gaze deep into the landscape. At the top of the picture, the night sky fades into a deep, rich dark blue, which enhances the fairy-tale atmosphere. The interplay of cool blues and warm pastel tones gives the entire composition a calming yet mystical quality. Overall, the painting exudes a mysterious, almost magical tranquillity that invites the viewer to linger and dream.
