About "Silent splendour at Wat Sitthawararam"

by Walter G. Allgöwer

About the artwork

The Buddha sits in perfect equanimity in the midst of the warm light, which settles like a silent blessing over stone and colour. The golden tunic, shimmering slightly in the sunlight, envelops his body like a breath of eternity. In the gesture of the Bhumispara mudra, his right hand touches the earth - a silent call to the world to witness his enlightenment. The moment in which Siddhartha Gautama became the awakened one seems to be captured here as if time itself were holding its breath.
The entrance to Wat Sitthawararam in Bangkok rises up like an intricately woven gateway between the earthly and the supernatural. Colours, patterns and intricate carvings wind around the statue as if to reveal the silent glow of inner peace. Mythological figures guard the way to this dormant presence, and the sun that rises above them transforms the place into a mosaic of splendour and devotion.
Here, between Asia's pulsating life and the quiet dignity of this sanctuary, man and myth meet. The statue becomes a mirror of a deeper knowledge: that enlightenment is not far away, but rests in the innermost core of every moment - silent, patient and infinitely clear.
