The meerkat, also called suricate or obsoletely Scharrtier, is a species of mammal in the mongoose family. With an average weight of 700 to 750 g, it is one of the smallest mongoose species and has a light gray coat with inconspicuous horizontal stripes. Meerkats live in arid regions of southern Africa.
