River power stations are actually modern water mills. They stand along a river or watercourse where dikes have been used to make a difference in height. The falling water rotates the paddle wheel of a turbine. The turbine generates power according to the principle of a bicycle dynamo. The biggest advantage of river power stations is that they can be used in areas with few height differences, such as the Netherlands. The biggest disadvantage is that they generate relatively little energy.
