About the artwork

In the snowy Limburg hills lies the village of Holset with a very special little Catholic church. A beautiful oil painting specially made for you to have a premium reproduction at Werk aan de Muur / Art Heroes. The history of Holset dates back to pre-historic times. Here, the Eburones are said to have dedicated a temple to Baal (Bel) on a hill and offered human sacrifices to it. Around 360 AD, St Servatius is said to have worked here as a missionary with little success. In 515, according to tradition, St Falco, bishop of Maastricht, consecrated the temple of Baal as a church. Here lies the origin of the worship of St Genoveva in Holset because the church was put under her protection. In 692, St Lambert and St Willibrord visited Holset. Legend has it that the village spring was poisoned by the god Baal when the inhabitants converted to Christianity. Lambert blessed the spring, from which an infernal dragon emerged, disappearing forever. Still today, the spring is called Lambert Spring. In the 8th century, it was rebuilt as a hall church, the remains of which can still be found in the north wall of the present church. Emperor Lothar III had the church enlarged in 1136. This church was extensively rebuilt several more times to its present form. Over the centuries, worship to St Genoveva has continued and the church still attracts many pilgrims today.
