Walking across the grazing meadows between the wooded banks and bushes, I suddenly find myself face to face with the beautiful Hill Country. Mechelen in the Geul valley, I am standing on quite a high slope facing south. I can see the Vijlnerbos on the left and on the right I discern the South Limburg village of Epen. In the distance, I look at Moresnet with the German Eifel and Belgian Ardennes far behind.
The gateway to the south beckons and longs for 'far away', warm southern Europe. In this work, the Heuvelland is shrouded in winter atmospheres, the moon scattering its soft silver-yellow light over the undulating hills. Limburg sleeps, the half-timbered houses peacefully blend into the landscape. Here and there another fine thin wisp of blue smoke curls from a chimney.
