A trip to the Falkland Islands is not an easy one to arrange. Of course, you can make your wishes in that area with various travel agencies, but my wife and I want to go on our own. For over a year and a half, emails from the Falkland Island Tourist Board, a kind of tourist office in the
capital Port Stanley, back and forth. After all, on this isolated archipelago, the options for finding suitable accommodation are limited. But eventually it works out. The trip continues during which we visit several islands. Transport between the islands is by small planes piloted by former Royal Air Force pilots. In the Western Falklands is Carcass Island, where we stay for a few days. Around our guest house, the only trees on the island grow, otherwise it is as bare as a louse. Every morning we go out and get a packed lunch. During a beach walk, we pass a large group of resting Southern elephant seals, the largest representatives of the Sealidae. Great to walk past those lobsters and photograph them at your leisure. At this time of year, the huge males are not fighting to defend their harem from overly intrusive, male intruders. They mainly sleep and rest, which does involve irritations among themselves. They are gigantic animals that are currently moulting. They fart and we hear roaring and coughing noises.
