With its short, broad wings and long legs, the sparrowhawk is well equipped to catch birds in forests and gardens. Main prey is songbirds such as sparrows, tits and starlings. The male is a lot smaller than the female. The larger females also catch larger birds such as turkey turtles and live in a more open area. Sparrowhawks are trippy and persistent hunters.
Small bird of prey. Essentially pale below, gray above with broadly banded tail. Always banded on underside (including young sparrows). Rather short, broad wings and long tail with sharp angles. Head does not protrude very far. Long and thin yellow legs and toes. Characteristic flight: a few quick flaps of the wings and then glides. Also scuds on thermals.
