Actually, you're in Hong Kong in a country apart. Although Hong Kong belongs to China, it is not under the communist government. Mountains, temples and sea are alternated in Hong Kong with lively markets, shopping malls and restaurants. Versatile!
Hong Kong means as much as "fragrant harbour", after the incense smoke that was sold in the harbour. Although Hong Kong has been populated for about 5000 years, the city has had a modest place in the Chinese empire for a long time. Only when the British began to use Hong Kong as a transit port for opium in the 19th century did the city gain more status. On the mainland, Hong Kong consists of the Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories. Hong Kong Island is located just off the coast along with some 200 other islands that are largely uninhabited.
