This squid was photographed during a night dive. just below the surface.
There, after dark, they search for fish looking for food. They often hunt in groups and come at the light of divers' lamps. They often shoot away quickly if you get too close, but sometimes you get the chance to photograph them at length. While taking a series of photos's you will see the squid suddenly change colour, this depends on their mood.
Squid have the ability to change colour and adapt to their environment for both preying and hiding from predators.
Squid were found to have skin cells that maintain a fixed colour and skin cells that can change colour. The researchers found that the specialised skin cells contain different types of reflectins and that the location and distribution of these reflectins varies from cell to cell.
