Photo of the small coastal village of St Abbs in the south east of Scotland. It is located by the St Abbs Head headland in the nature reserve of the same name. It is a beautiful area with high cliffs and rugged rocks.
Previously called Coldingham Shore, St Abbs was renamed at the end of the 19th century by landowner Andrew Usher. He was instrumental in improving the fishing village and harbor. He bought the Northfield estate on the outskirts of the village. You can see the Northfield House on this estate at the far right of the picture, on top of the green cliff. Usher financed a new village house and a new school that was built in 1887. You can also see that school in the photo, it is the building with the orange roofs just behind Northfield House. Today it is home to the St Abbs Visitor Center. Usher also funded the construction of the local church and the extension of the outer harbor wall.
In 2017 there was another name change for the village, but this time it was temporary. For two days the village acted as 'New Asgard' in the filming of the movie Avengers: Endgame. The village was given signs after the shooting to indicate that St Abbs has a 'twinning' with New Asgard. A funny reference to the film recordings.
