About "St.Jakob in Wallgau"

by Thomas Riess

About the artwork

The first church in Wallgau was built in 1295. At the end of the 15th century, a hall church with a stone-vaulted choir extension in the Gothic style was built on the same site. It was dedicated to St James the Elder. The choir has a net-ribbed vault with tracery of the choir apex window. The baroque church tower with onion dome and the present sacristy were built in 1680. The high altar was built in 1683. The church tower was renewed between 1723 and 1724. After several letters of protest to the bishop, the reconstruction work was completed in 1730. The painted Stations of the Cross in the church remained the last new decoration for a long time. At the end of the 18th century, the church became an independent parish. Various extensions and alterations followed in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1988, the last comprehensive interior and exterior restoration to date took place, followed by the renewal of the technical installations. (Source: WIKIPEDIA)
