The Saint-Louis Cathedral in Thakhek is a jewel of religious architecture nestling in this quiet town in Laos. Built by French missionaries at the beginning of the 20th century, it illustrates the Christian influence in a predominantly Buddhist region. Its sober façade, grey stonework and square bell tower give the building a discreet majesty. The calm that reigns here offers a moment of meditation out of time. Even outside church services, visitors feel a certain inner peace. It embodies the historic link between Europe and South-East Asia, and remains an essential spiritual and architectural landmark to this day.
