Realistic acrylic painting of the Irish painter Stanhope Forbes with his painting of fishermen, all painted by the Dutch fine artist Paul Meijering - The original painting is 90 x 120 cm and part of a permanent collection.

Stanhope Alexander Forbes (Dublin, 18 November 1857 - there, 2 March 1947) was an Irish painter. He was often called 'the father of the Newlyn School'.

Forbes was born in Dublin, the son of Juliette de Guise Forbes, a French woman, and William Forbes, an English railway manager, who was later transferred to London.

He married fellow painter Elizabeth Armstrong at St Peter's Church in Newlyn in the summer of 1889. Their first home was in the cottage "Cliffs Castle", which overlooked the sea. They had a son named Alexander (usually known as Alec), born on 26 May 1893. The couple had a house built for the family in Higher Faughan, Penzance. Elizabeth died in 1912.

In 1915, Forbes married friend and former student Maudie Palmer, who had been "assistant, helper and friend to the whole Forbes family". During World War I, his son Alec served in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry and died on 3 September 1916. He is buried in Guillemont Road Cemetery, where his headstone bears an inscription composed by his father. Stanhope Forbes also sculpted and erected a memorial to his son in their local parish church with the inscription, "I will take me from my country and from my kin and from my father's house to a land that God will show me".

Forbes died on 2 March 1947 at the age of 89 in Newlyn. He was buried in the churchyard of Sancreed parish church.
