Today Stavanger and Sandnes is the oil and energy capital of Europe, and the main source of income for the region is the oil sector. This industry attracts a large number of different nationalities to the region, which gives Stavanger a very international atmosphere.
The centre of Stavanger is quite compact, which makes it possible to walk around most places of interest. The old town of Stavanger offers the largest collection of wooden houses in Europe, with over 170 white wooden houses. If you walk through the center it is highly recommended to walk into one of the many museums in the city. Stavanger is home to the Norwegian Petroleum Museum, the Stavanger Museum of Visual Arts and the Norwegian Cannery Museum.
