The subjects Marieke photographs can be found in her daily surroundings and also during her travels. The composition of the image is important, as well as the perspective from which the photograph was taken. Marieke plays with frames, lines and surfaces and zooms in on details such as connections and structures. Searching for traces of people, animals, the elements and capturing them as silent witnesses of what has been. The photographs are always in colour, because this comes closest to her way of observing and 'reality'. Often there are several photographs of one subject that together show a story, but in themselves the photographs can be surprising because it is not always immediately clear what you are looking at as a spectator. Marieke is not looking for the perfect picture, but rather wants to show how beautiful everyday surroundings can be. There is a difference between looking and seeing and she really tries to see everyday things.
