In this expressive watercolour from 2009, R. Tielemans creates a dramatic and poetic landscape, in which fire and water, air and earth merge in a powerful play of colours. The fiery sky, in saturated hues of orange, red and pink, fills the upper part of the canvas and radiates intense energy.
Dark, jagged lines cut through the composition like lightning bolts or cracked rock formations, giving the whole a tension that feels almost electric. The horizon line seems to balance between chaos and stillness, with a reflective body of water in cool shades of blue underneath providing balance. The brushwork is loose and dynamic, with a palpable freedom in technique and use of materials.
Textures are created by mixing wet and dry paint, splashing and scraping, giving the painting a vibrant skin. This work is a blistering visual translation of emotion and force of nature, in which the landscape is felt rather than literally perceived.
