The Summer Turtle (Streptopelia turtur), formerly known as a turtledove, is a long-distance puller from the family of pigeons and turtledoves (Columbidae). It is the only European pigeon species that stays below the Sahara in winter. The species breeds in wooded areas, wooded banks, forest edges, farmyards and fruit orchards near agricultural areas.[2] The species has been declining rapidly since the mid-20th century due to the intensification and homogenisation of agriculture as well as the intense hunting pressure in Mediterranean countries during the migratory period and in wintering areas.
