The Liesbos is the largest and oldest summer oak forest in the Netherlands. Previously the name was different and people wrote it as Het Liesbosch. The name Liesbos comes from the small village of Lies which is located here. In 1200 the area was described as the estate of Hage and Lies. For centuries, the Liesbos was owned by the Lord of Breda and from 1403 it was the Counts of Nassau, later the family of Orange Nassau (Breda is a real Nassau city). The many long lanes and straight avenues are very old and specially built for hunting including falconry.
