About ‘Sunrise in the polder’ by Kees van den Burg

Sunrise over the Does near Hoogmade with the Does and Kalkmolen.

The Doesmolen is a seesaw mill near Hoogmade. The mill is the first on the Doespolderweg to be seen when approaching Hoogmade from the west; a short distance from the Doesmolen is the Grosmolen along the same road. The Doesmolen was built in 1630 for the purpose of draining the Doespolder. It was in operation until 1953, after which, after a period of stagnation, it was transferred to the Rijnlandse Molenstichting in 1963, which restored the Doesmolen in 1965.

The Kalkmolen is a polder mill in Hoogmade, which stood in Leiderdorp until 2007, between the A4 motorway and the industrial estate. The mill dates from 1685 and was built for the purpose of pumping the Kalkpolder. The mill has been owned by the Rijnlandse Molenstichting since it was decommissioned in 1972. Due to the deteriorating mill biotope, it was decided in 2006 to move the Kalkmolen to a location near Hoogmade, where it will be used as a base mill for the Doesmolen, so that both mills can grind together now that the Doesmolen has insufficient water due to a lowering of the water level.
