Ameland is from the west the fourth inhabited Dutch island and belongs to the province of Friesland. The entire island falls under one municipality that bears the same name. On January 1, 2019, the Wadden Island, and therefore the municipality, had 3,673 inhabitants (source: CBS). There are four villages on the island: Hollum, Ballum, Nes and Buren. In addition, there are the hamlets Kooiplaats and Ballumerbocht. There used to be another village called Sier, but it was "drowned" in storms and now lies in the sea. Hollum is the village with the oldest house on Ameland, dating from the 16th or early 17th century
