Sunset on the Norwegian coast

by Ralf Lehmann

Sunset on the coast near Storvik along the Kystriksveien (Fv17) in Nordland, Norway. The low-hanging sun is just above the horizon, illuminating cloud formations and mountain silhouettes along the coast. Backlit scene, photographed with a telephoto lens.

The sun is just above the sea near Storvik, right next to the sloping mountainside. Dark mountain silhouettes stretch across the frame from the left, standing out against the orange-yellow horizon. Above them float bold clouds with blue-violet shadows and reddish-glowing lower edges. The delicate texture of the sea’s surface provides a tranquil contrast.

This photograph was taken during my journey along the Norwegian coastal road, Kystriksveien. Throughout the day, rain showers had swept across the coast time and again. It was only just before sunset that the cloud cover parted, allowing this intense evening light to shine through. Using a telephoto lens, I framed a shot that brings together the tiered mountain contours, the low-hanging sun and the clouds.

For me, the image captures the memory of just how surprisingly a rainy coastal landscape can change within a matter of minutes. It is precisely the contrast between the heavy clouds and the warm light that makes this moment so special to me.

As a wall hanging, the photograph adds a warm splash of colour without relying solely on its colours: the striking mountain shapes and the clear sea horizon lend the composition a sense of tranquillity. In an interior featuring plain surfaces or dark wood tones, these contrasts can really come into their own. Anyone who has travelled along Norway’s coast may recognise in it a familiar combination of changeable weather, mountains and the open sea.
