On a warm evening in August, I stood among the heather in the Loonse and Drunense Dunes. The purple bushes were in full bloom, colouring the landscape far and wide. In the distance, the sun was setting, colouring the sky orange, pink and blue.
The composition was defined by the textures in the heather and the rolling sand hills in the background. The lone tree in the middle broke the picture in just the right place. Despite the serenity of the moment, there was a lot of dynamism in the sky - the clouds slowly moved away, taking the last of the light with them.
The heather here usually blooms in mid-August. The Loonse and Drunense Dunes are known for their alternation of drifting sand, forest and open heathland. Combined with a beautiful sunset, this produces surprising images every year.
