About the artwork

In terms of spatial arrangement, landscape in the distance is depicted at a horizontal viewing angle, but landscape in the foreground is paint from an overlooking viewpoint, mixed viewpoints common in Chen's work. Compositionally, the focal point of the work is the towering poinciana, which occupies about two-thirds of the canvas. Confident and imposing, its soaring branches and lush leaves are a powerful symbol of life force. The vibrant freehand brushwork shows that Chen often tried to incorporate the linear rhythms of ink paintings into his oil paintings. The artist used a simple, almost abandoned brush technique to depict the calm contentment of geese and red-crowned cranes on the lake and strolling tourists on the shore. The brushwork is simple, sincere and unadorned, filling the image with romantic, fairy-tale harmony and tranquility, fully expressing the artist's deep, abiding love for his birthplace.

Tan Teng-pho (pinyin: Chén Chéngbō; February 2, 1895 - March 25, 1947) was a Taiwanese painter and politician. Tan devoted his life to education and creation, and was deeply concerned about the development of humanist culture in Taiwan. He was dedicated not only to improving his own painting, but also to promoting the aesthetic education of the Taiwanese people.
