The word Tauern originally meant "high transitions" (passes) in Austria's Central Alps and characterized the many mule tracks and passes that cut the parallel tributary valleys of the Salzach into the mountains. But since the Middle Ages, when mining was at its peak, Tauern has also been used to describe the associated mountain ranges. The name was retained in many local names.
Josef Stoitzner (February 1884 in Vienna, Austria; 6 July 1951 in Bramberg im Pinzgau, Land Salzburg) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist.
Stoitzner was represented at all major German art exhibitions in Munich from 1938 to 1943.
Josef Stoitzner remained dedicated to mood impressionism throughout his life; his early or late winter landscapes are highly characteristic, in which meticulously executed branches of bare trees contrast with the soft clarity of patches of snow and a clear evening sky.
