About ‘Tenerife’s stony soul’ by Walter G. Allgöwer

Amidst the dust of millennia and the clear blue of the Atlantic sky, Pico del Teide rises like a silent sentinel over the Canary Islands. From the gentle slopes of Montaña Blanca, the view leads upwards to its dark lava mass, scarred by fire, wind and time. The slopes appear barren yet alive – a mosaic of ash, solidified lava flows and light-coloured rock that shimmers almost golden in the sunlight.
Up here, the world slows its pace. Every step through the volcanic landscape of Teide National Park seems to bring one closer to the Earth’s origins. The air is thin, the silence profound, and over it all lies that rare clarity that only high mountains and islands can bestow.
At 3,715 metres, the Teide is not only Spain’s highest mountain but also the heart of a unique natural area protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Between sky and lava, Tenerife reveals a landscape of archaic beauty – rugged, majestic and yet filled with an almost unreal tranquillity.
