Tesserae

by INGO

With Tesserae, you’re bringing a distinctive, eye-catching piece into your home. The artwork depicts a powerful yet serene portrait of a woman, composed of thousands of mosaic tiles. The striking three-dimensional relief and the organic laying pattern (andamento) follow the contours of the face, lending the image depth and movement.
The warm palette of terracotta, ochre and travertine cream exudes tranquillity. The lips, with their deep red marble veins, and the piercing green eye with the sheen of malachite provide powerful accents. Set against the rough, chalky background, reminiscent of an ancient museum wall, the work unites classical history with modern design.

This work is a textbook example of modern mosaic art. It is inspired by the traditional Roman and Byzantine Opus Tessellatum technique, in which small square tiles (tesserae) are used to form patterns. The modern aspect lies in the bold, asymmetrical cut-out and the flowing, Art Nouveau-style lines of the face. It is a digital ode to an age-old physical craft, in which perfect digital design blends with the ‘perfect imperfection’ of rough natural stone and matt cement joints.

To bring out the tactile, robust quality of the stone texture to its fullest, as an artist, I recommend the following matt materials:
* Aluminium Dibond (Matt)
* Fine Art Paper / Giclée (Matt framed)
* Both an Art Frame (fabric frame) and Canvas are highly suitable for this work, provided you choose the correct, matt finish.

Suitable home and interior styles:
* Modern and Contemporary
* Wabi-Sabi / Japandi
* Modern Chic / Hotel Chic
* Mediterranean / Rustic
