About "Thanaka Make Up"

by Ton Bijvank

About the artwork

In Myanmar, you often see the women and young girls walking around with powdered faces. This is Thanaka, a powder used as make-up. It is made by grinding the bark of the Thanaka tree. The tree bark is then mixed with water to form a light yellowish paste. The thanaka tree grows in the more arid areas of the country, such as in the area around and between Mandalay, Monywa and Bagan. Hence, that is where the custom originated. It takes as many as 30 years for this tree species to mature. The bark of the tree is removed and divided into pieces, which is how the bark is traded in the country. The women grind the bark into powder and mix it with water to make a light yellowish paste. The women smear this on their cheeks. Some girls even add dried flowers because of the scent. And whether you are in Yangon, Kalaw, Inle Lake or anywhere else, the women have made themselves beautiful. Apart from the cosmetic and sun-blocking properties of thanaka, it is also believed to cure acne.
