On the green plains, a meadow full of splendour,
There the godwit dances, in the sunlight softly.
A primeval Dutch bird, proud and fine,
In the farmland, where they are happy.
With his graceful beak and long body,
He brings us smiles in bird company.
In Friesland, North and South Holland to be found,
There he builds his nest, among the tall child.
In February he returns, full of fledgling hope,
At ponds and meadows, where the water demolishes.
The breeding season starts, a spectacular show,
With courtship flights, in the sky, high and low, very soon.
Not a colony breeder, but cosy around,
With conspecifics, for protection and some levity, chortled.
A simple grass nest, hidden in the tall grass,
There it breeds, in its natural class.
The black-tailed godwit, a bird that chose the Netherlands,
In 2015, the crowd favourite, the choice.
With wings dancing in the morning glow,
The black-tailed godwit, an ambassador of our primeval Dutch heritage.
