A (SVH) Master Chef is a chef who has successfully passed the master test of the Stichting Vakbekwaamheid Horeca (SVH). The SVH title is the highest degree of professionalism that can be achieved in the catering industry in the Netherlands.
By passing this test, a SVH Masterchef has proved that he is capable of leading the organisation in the kitchen and of ensuring that the culinary profession is carried out at the highest level.
The title of Master Chef is protected by trademark law. Only those who have passed the Master's test and have been officially inaugurated as Masterchefs by SVH, and who are therefore included in the register of SVH Masters, are entitled to use this title.
The term Master Chef is sometimes confused with the title of Master Teacher. A master chef is someone who has followed the so-called master chef training course and passed the master chef examination. A master may train new employees in the catering industry. Catering establishments that employ one or more master teachers may be appointed as an approved training company.
