La Petite France is perhaps the most charming district Strasbourg has to offer its tourists. For this reason, it is almost always populated by visitors from all over the world.
In the past, La Petite France was an unpopular and sinister part of town. The hides and skins that the tanners hung up spread a foul odor that many Strasbourg residents avoided. In the Middle Ages, crooks and bandits found shelter here and allegedly a lot of dark business was done here - even a lively red light milieu is said to have been here.
