About ‘The Last Supper, The First Drink’ by Franka Poulain

Red lobster, wine, glassware and crockery are brought together in a layered composition of pink, cobalt, cream, black and red. In *Last Supper, First Drink*, a lavishly laid table becomes not a traditional still life, but an almost abstract celebration of forms. Luxury and pleasure are clearly present, yet treated with humour: everything is just a little too much, too red and too exuberant. As a result, the work balances between desire and satiety. It evokes the feeling of a long summer’s evening when the glasses are filled one last time, without anyone worrying about tomorrow. A distinctly contemporary work about food, enjoyment, abundance and the beauty of fleeting pleasures.
