The Nile is at its narrowest at this spot, where the mighty river is driven through a 6-metre gorge. The water wrestles its way through this gully at high speed, resulting in a strong current further on and forcing us to stay to within a few dozen metres of the waterfall.
Despite the raging water plunging down the centre of the picture, this image still exudes a certain calm. The water in front is moving but doing calmly, the rocks have been in place for ages, not caring about the current. The little birds are sitting quietly on the tree while the natural violence in the background is just part of their day. The forest is bright green, the water murky blue with layers of white foam. The stones stand out contrastingly against the greenery, the sky is blank. It is the perfect balance between calm and chaos.
