The Noordertoren, or North Tower, on the Dutch Wadden Island of Schiermonnikoog is a lighthouse. It was built between 1853 and 1854, together with another tower, the Zuidertoren.
Because there were no light signals in the past, two towers or fires were sometimes placed so that the sailor knew where he was. In addition, two fires or towers could form a line so that ships could be guided past dangerous shallows.
Originally the tower had a fixed light. In 1910 the tower was given a rotating light. From then on the coast could be recognised with one light and the light of the Zuidertoren became superfluous.
