Photo of De Passage, Rotterdam, photographed between 1890 and 1900. De Passage (1879-1940) in Rotterdam was a covered shopping arcade between the Coolvest and Korte Hoogstraat. Commissioned in 1879 to the design of J.C. van Wijk, the Passage consisted of two levels when it opened in 1879. However, the ground floor contained too little 'walk'. Since 1905, it housed a bathing establishment, frequented by marines from Oostplein, among others. In 1882, the Passage was the first building in Rotterdam to be electrically lit. The Passage was destroyed during the bombing of Rotterdam in May 1940. Today, the site is home to the C&A clothing company.
