About ‘The Tiler (or bricklayer)’ by Bram de Jong

In the brickworks, it was the rammer’s job to tamp the clay-filled brick moulds onto the drying bed, after which the still-wet bricks could dry. They were then fired in the brick kiln. With the mechanisation of the process in the first half of the 20th century, this work was taken over by machines. In the municipality of Olst-Wijhe, just outside the village of Den Nul on the Rijksstraatweg on the IJssel dyke, stands a sculpture of a brick-setter by Theo Schreurs (1939–2024).
I didn’t want to take a photo of the sculpture itself, but rather to let it form part of the IJssel landscape. The beautifully coloured sky and the streaks of light on the dyke provided the perfect setting for a landscape photograph with a bonus.
