About ‘The Ural Owl in the snow’ by Rando Kromkamp Natuurfotograaf

The Ural owl is larger and has a longer tail than the tawny owl; large pale grey or brownish facial veil, round head. Plumage light grey with distinct, brownish-black longitudinal stripes. Wings and tail strongly banded. Beak yellow, nails yellowish brown with dark brown tips, eyes relatively small, iris blackish brown. Sexes similarly coloured, female slightly heavier.
Flight:
Flight pattern with relatively long, wedge-shaped rounded tail; wings and tail distinctly transversely banded.
Habitat:
The Ural owl is not tied to specific forest types. They are often found at the edge of clearings, in clear-cut or moorland areas. Still or slow-flowing water is also part of its preferred inventory. Besides the presence of open areas with a good range of small mammals, sufficient nesting opportunities are essential, whether natural caves, nest boxes or old raptor nests. The species does not inhabit dense, contiguous forests and steep slopes are avoided.
