A rainbow is a coloured sometimes incomplete semicircle arch that can be observed in the sky when the (low-level) sun shines against a mist of water droplets and the sun is behind the observer. It is an optical effect caused by the refraction and reflection of light in the water droplets.
The story about a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow comes from Irish folklore. Gnome creatures - leprechauns - would hide their gold at the end of the rainbow.
Although the story about gnome gold sounds rather fanciful, it may have a historical origin, having to do with so-called rainbow saucers.
Rainbow saucers are gold, bowl-shaped coins made by the Celtic people hundreds of years before our era.
