The marina of Torshavn, Faroe Islands.
Tórshavn (name of the city in Faroese; Danish: Thorshavn) is the capital of the Faroese archipelago, a largely self-governing territory of Denmark. The city is located on the island of Streymoy, with 19,282 inhabitants (2005). The name of the city means port of Thor. Thor is the god of thunder and lightning in Nordic mythology.
The Faroese Parliament, Løgting, is located in the old town of Tinganes. In Tórshavn you will also find the national art museum of the archipelago, Listasavn Føroya.
The city was founded in the 10th century, and was occupied by the United Kingdom during the Second World War (1941-1945).
In Tórshavn there is also the football stadium of the Faroese football team, namely the Tórsvøllur.
