About "The endangered swan, without text and repainted, after Jan Asselijn's painting,"

by MadameRuiz

About the artwork

The endangered swan, after Jan Asselijn's 1650 painting.

A swan energetically defends her nest against a dog. The fight was interpreted politically in later centuries: the white swan was understood as the statesman Johan de Witt, murdered in 1672, defending the country against its enemies. This interpretation made the painting the first purchase in the National Gallery of Art (the forerunner of the Rijksmuseum) in 1800.

With this work, you bring an old master into your home, but in a more modern version because of the expressionist brushstroke.

The original is from the collection of the Rijksmuseum. The original can be seen there in the Gallery of Honour. Object number SK-A-4
