About "The famous Kiss of Berlin"

by Jenco van Zalk

About the artwork

One of the famous spots in Berlin is the "kiss". "My God, help me survive this deadly love" is the text that accompanies this monumental painting on the Berlin Wall, known as the East Side Gallery.
Also called the Brotherly Kiss, it is a graffiti painting by Dmitri Vrubel on the east side of the Berlin Wall. It was painted in 1990 and has become one of the most famous graffiti artworks on the Berlin Wall. The painting shows Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker in a socialist brotherly kiss, a reproduction of a photograph taken in 1979 during the 30th anniversary of the founding of the German Democratic Republic.

This is not the original version. In 2005, the drawing was so tarnished with graffiti that it was decided to have the artist redo it. This rendition was finished in 2009. Buses full of people visit it daily to see it, take a picture with it or take a picture themselves for the digital photo book.

Some of the photos I took in Berlin show the stationary and the moving city together. Buildings, the Berlin Wall, streets, Checkpoint Charlie and the like, immobile in the cityscape. With long shutter speeds, time shots, the people passing by, as well as the trams, trains, buses and cars, made part of the image about the city of Berlin.
