This picture was taken during World Sidecar Championships in Lommel Belgium. Riders race to the first corner here, trying to get into good position for the rest of the race.
For me as a sports photographer, this is one of the most spectacular moments to capture. Looking through lens, you hear swelling noise coming at you and try to determine which drivers will come through the corner first.
It is a singularly spectacular moment where it is surprising that in the rush of the corner they do not ride over each other. As a photographer, standing around the corner is not entirely without risk as a wrong steering action or collision could have serious consequences for me.
Another aspect is that you have to be prepared that the moment you pass them you are subjected to a complete shower of sand and I have to protect my camera and lens at the right moment.
As a sports photographer, I love capturing the intense action moments and hope that through the image that intensity is also experienced that way by the viewer.
From my background as a physical education teacher, athletics trainer of many national champions and former national athletics coach, I developed my view of the 'moving' athlete over the years, a skill that has taken me far as a trainer and sports teacher.
