The 'Out of the ordinary' series is inspired by the world's rarest flowers. Each flower has its own unique characteristics, shapes and colours. Watch, enjoy and cherish these special, unusual, sometimes peculiar and wonderful eccentrics. The Rothschild's Poppy orchid is considered one of the rarest flowers in the world It is very hard to find, as it not only grows at an altitude of over 500 metres, but also takes 15 years to bloom. The flower is so rare that it is now worth thousands of dollars on the black market. The Rothschild's Slipper Orchid is one of the five species of Slipper Orchids (the name comes from the lower lip of the flower that resembles a slipper), which in turn is a subcategory of the orchid family. It has long yellow and black or reddish striped petals. What makes the Rothschild's Slipper Orchid a unique flower within the orchid family is that two thin petals grow horizontally from the centre. Native to the island of Borneo in Malaysia, the Rothschild's Slipper Orchid can only grow in the rainforests of Mount Kinabalu. The flower grows between altitudes of 500 and 1,200 metres above sea level. You can see these flowers in a fenced area of Kinabalu National Park in April and May, the flowering season. Out of the ordinary was created as a digital painting by drawing on a tablet with digital brushes and pencils. This makes the work beautifully printable on any material. Inspired by traditional painting techniques, the artwork is built up in several layers, creating depth in the colours.
