A holy water vessel or aspersorium is a vessel or basin containing holy water usually placed near the doors in Catholic churches so that the faithful can sprinkle themselves with it when entering the church, while making a sign of the cross, as a symbol of external and internal purification. Sometimes it is placed on a pedestal. When entering the church, the faithful dip the fingertips of the right hand into the basin and then make a sign of the cross. Constantin Émile Meunier (Etterbeek, 12 April 1831 - Ixelles, 4 April 1905) was a Belgian sculptor, painter and graphic artist. He was commissioned by Camille Lemonnier to draw a series of illustrations for his book La Belgique about Belgium's mining regions. This industrial world and the 'hard labour' of coal workers made a deep impression on him, in line with the rise of the social movement in this period. He would henceforth devote himself to portraying the worker.
