An atmospheric black-and-white shot of the cliffs topped by the lighthouse at Neist Point, just before sunset, captures the magic of this remote stretch of Scottish coastline. The lighthouse, a lone sentinel at the edge of the world, stands small but stately on the rocky cliffs, looking out over the endless ocean. The sun's rays break through the clouds, with bright light shining dramatically across the clouds and the sea. Like the light of the lighthouse in the sky.
Although the photo is in black and white, you can feel the warmth of the sun's rays in the clouds and the power of the light used to mark off the dark waves of the sea. The reflection on the water creates a shimmering path stretching towards the horizon in the lower half of the photo. A horizon reinforced by the horizontal lines in the clouds in the upper half of the photo.
The coastline of Neist Point is sharp and imposing in the dark shadow of the backlight. The cliffs, which plunge really steeply into the sea, seem to float above the water like a mirage. That image is enhanced by the protruding point of the highest cliff above the horizon. The lighthouse, which seems small compared to the immense landscape, stands firmly in the foreground, full in the light of a silvery ocean, lonely but watchful. With right above it the watchful eye of the sun.
