About ‘The mines of Midelt’ by Frank Heinz

Immerse yourself in the hidden world beneath the earth’s surface. This highly expressive watercolour interprets the historic mine entrances of Midelt in Morocco as a fascinating interplay of light, shadow and geological structures.

The colour palette focuses on natural, earthy shades: soft browns, warm ochres and subtle terracotta tones blend into an organic whole. The deliberate reduction of red tones in the upper section gives the composition a calm and grounded feel. The deep, almost black shadows at the centre of the cave entrances lend the work a mystical depth and literally draw the viewer’s gaze into the mountain. The frayed edges typical of watercolour and the visible paper texture emphasise the unfinished, raw character of the mine.
