The old house entrance - Ialysos by Momentaufnahme | Marius Ahlers

This impressive colour photograph captures the melancholy beauty of decay and transience. The foreground of the picture is dominated by an old, rusty lattice gate attached to two pillars. The iron bars of the gate are covered in rust, indicating a long history and lack of maintenance. The gate is secured with a heavy chain, which is locked by a padlock that is also rusty. This detail conveys a feeling of seclusion and isolation.

The two pillars to which the gate is attached show clear signs of the passage of time. The plaster is flaking off, revealing the structure underneath. This weathering gives the pillars a rough texture and contributes to the overall mood of the picture. Behind it, slightly out of focus, the wooden door of an old villa can be recognised. This door is also long past its prime: the paint is peeling and the wood looks brittle and weathered. The once magnificent façade of the villa is now in a state of decay, emphasising the transience and decay of this once proud architecture.

To the right of the door, an electricity meter is embedded in the façade, a modern element that stands in stark contrast to the ageing surroundings. This contrast emphasises the discrepancy between the villa's original splendour and its current state.
