The North Tower, or Buitentoren, on the Dutch Wadden Island of Schiermonnikoog is a 37-metre-high lighthouse. It was built together with another tower, the Zuidertoren, between 1853 and 1854. Because people used to lack light characters, they sometimes placed two towers or fires so that the sailor knew where he was.
On the beautiful island of Schiermonnikoog, the beaches can be found on the north side. These are the widest beaches in Europe. At its widest stretch, the beach is almost one kilometre wide. This island enjoys National Park status and is thus a protected area, The island can be reached by boat from Lauwersoog and the island itself is car-free except for the residents themselves and supplies.
